We are proud to collaborate with Julie on the Hero Collection, with all proceeds supporting shelter in Gaza through HEAL Palestine. Julie has graciously offered her artwork of Flo Kennedy for this initiative. All of Julie's portraits for Black Awareness Month are striking, but it was Flo who captured our hearts\u2014an activist, outspoken and unyielding. She became the muse for our newest hero design, thanks to Julie.<\/p>
We met Julie on the corner of Mulberry and College, protesting against the genocide in Gaza. Julie is an author, illustrator, bookseller, and activist. She grew up in New York, lived in Germany, and is now based in Colorado.<\/p>
A woman with an Irish background, a huge heart, who refuses to stay quiet in the face of injustice, and who stands with Palestine. I knew we could become friends.<\/p>
Who Was Flo Kennedy?<\/strong><\/p> Born in 1916 in Kansas City, Missouri, Flo Kennedy was a force of nature\u2014a lawyer, activist, and radical feminist who refused to be silenced. She was one of the first Black women to graduate from Columbia Law School in 1951. When she was initially rejected, the dean told her it was because she was a woman, not because she was Black. Her response? She threatened to sue, and the school reversed its decision.<\/p> Kennedy went on to represent Billie Holiday, H. Rap Brown, and the Black Panthers. She co-founded the National Black Feminist Organization in 1973 and the Feminist Party, which backed Shirley Chisholm's presidential run. She also helped challenge New York's restrictive abortion laws, shifting the legal landscape before Roe v. Wade.<\/p> Throughout her life, she fought relentlessly against both racism and sexism\u2014refusing to let anyone silence her or diminish her.
